The April Installment of the Directors Chair...
Hurry up and wait!
Between dodging monsoon like conditions
in our area, April is a very exciting time for racers. April brings most racers and riders out from their winter hibernation.
They flock to local tracks and trails trying their best to pretend they have not lost their smoothness and speed. But in the
simplest words, it's time to "Do Work". It's easy to identify those who have followed the winter racing
circuit, like a group of patchouli scented hippies following the Grateful Dead, these guys are devoted, to the point of them selling
grilled cheese sandwitchs in the parking lot before Jefferson Starship takes the stage. Either way, how do you get into battle
against a relentless racer? You could pray that he is as burned out as the hippies mentioned in my prior metaphor, or
you can get to your local track and practice. Practice?? I said it!!! It's more than heading to the track and boosting the
jumps, and snapping gates, or just shutting down your engine halfway threw the first straight. There is no way to
predict, accuratly, the outcome of any race. That jump you have been sky'n all day may not be jumpable at race speeds. It's
nice to test out methods through an obstacle. Just because you are a big shot Novice doesn't mean you are too good to roll
or manual a jump. There will come a time during a race where somebody snakes your line or stifles your speed. If you had practice
rolling or manualing, you would know what to expect from the obstacle, and not run the chance of getting caught manualing
a deep dish double only to case your front tire. Take the time to determine what is your faster line through an obstacle and
how much speed and energy you will have at that point during the race. Also go ahead and get a few full power gates in. Don't
be discouraged if there are much faster guys in the gate. If they are that fast "they aint gona be in your way"!
Being consistent is the biggest goal in BMX Racing. Winning is fun, BUT can you do it day in and day out? In the end,
you gotta do what works best for you, don't be afraid to push your limits. A little bit of hard work early in the season
could pay off HUGE in the fall!
