The Groove is Southbound and Down...
The Groove traveling circus is making it's way down South to Charlottsville, Virginia this Saturday (May 21st) to set up shop, (we will have a full service shop setup in a tent) at the 631 Compound Jam. (The Groove store will be OPEN with business as usual all weekend) The White Whale Van will be pulling out of the Shops parking lot at 8:30am sharp. Seats are full in the van, however, everybody is welcome to follow us down in their own vehicles. It's ten bucks to get into the Jam, and as alwas you should kick whoever's driving you a ten spot for gas. The Compound's looking dialled and is sure to be an epic day. For more info, check the flyer, hit up the 631 Compound on facebook OR holla on the GrooveHotline. 304-261-5230. See ya Saturday...

May's installment of the "Directors Chair" with Captain Dan...

"Out with the Old and in with the New?"

I have always heard the saying "the only thing that stays the same is change".  BMX is no different. But if you have been riding or racing for double digit years, as some of us have, you will have noticed the "wave" effect. The ups and the downs of BMX. Both in interest and part production. In the late '90's BMX Racing and street thrashing were on fire! Companies were coming out of the woodwork to make a buck. Looking back it almost seemed laughable, with companies like Speed Stick, Panasonic Audio and countless others. Now as BMX racing nears it's second Olympic games, be on the lookout for the outrageous pairings! I wouldn't be surprised at all to open a Magazine or click a link to see an Intense/Kentucky Fried Chicken rider. The "wave" is on a 10-12 year cycle (no pun intended). But how will you know when the wave hits?? The answer is outrageous bike parts!!
When you are questioning the purpose or design of a new part, the shoreline is receding. With more and more people getting into BMX, companies will do whatever they can to stand out. Need it be having bolt on rear ends or an adjustable headtube angle, held on by a series of glorified wingnuts. Whatever the case, companies will have a few extra bucks to toss towards the R&D department, and the Frakenstein parts they put out will be the WTF moments I have been waiting for. Most parts get swept away only to break and be discussed years later. But, some survive and will shape BMX racing for the next ten years. ie: Aluminum Frames. (Haro & GT in the late 90's; every company and their brother today)
One fad that rooted itself deep like a Hemlock Tree is clipless pedals. Little Back Story...  Clips were brought on to the Race scene primarily by two dudes, who were already faster than hell; Mike Kng and Brian Lopes. They used clips at an ABA time trial race in 1997 and they never looked back. (editors note... Brian Lopes used a 3 multispeed derailler system, made by Mongoose, at that same race. The system failed miserably, ending the debate of multi speed bikes being brought into BMX racing) Once hardcore Race Dads caught wind of the added "advantage", little Billy's ankles and knees didn't stand a chance. Kids, who didn't know what foot they they rode forward were attached to their bikes and falling over thus holding up moto's at the races. But the clipless pedal epidemic is a beef i'll have to save for another ime. just keep your eyes open to what's happening around you because just last week Redlind dropped a $1000 full carbon frame. I better get my life jacket on... the waves are getting big and rolling in fast!
